TWO FIFTY-FOUR WESTMINSTER ROAD
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK
To His Excellency, The Govenor of Alabama
Govenor B. M. Miller
Dear Govenor Miller,
I am a young
citizen of these United States and
have never had very much say
in governmental matters except
the right to vote. In reading the
newspaper for the past week
I have been very interested
in this "Scotsboro" case. Living
up here in Rochester, New York
one doesn't get much of a chance
to read New York newspapers,
but fortunately I have been able
to receive and read the New
York Herald Tribune.
2
I am a white girl. I have
always had the best opportunities
for travel and study as a young
girl. My home life has been
a happy one. I have always tried
my best to do for others. I am
connected with two volunteer
social-aide societies that do much
for the sick and needy. I have
came in contact with many
negros, some of high standard
and some of low, but they are
an unfortunate race. They are to
be helped and pitied - not hindered
and begrudged.
Don't you feel deep down
in your heart, govenor Miller,
that these young negro boys are
not being given a fair say or
even a trial - can't you yourself
feel that it's the race not so
much the supposed crime?
3
My thoughts and feeling on
this matter are only the emotions
of one person out of thousands,
Miss Bates and Mrs. Price are
of the lowest type woman - they
aren't to be respected - a "low"
woman is far worse than
a "low" man - These women
are the ones to suffer not
the young negros who are
victims of lies and bigoting
Don't you feel, govenor Miller,
that justice isn't being implied?
I'd give my right arm if I
could keep those fellows in
any possible way, and I
hope that you will be able to
do something.
Sincerely,
Carol R. Slowau

Miller State Capitol Building Montgomery Birmingham Ala. Sixty-nine Bank Street New York, N.Y. COPY Concerned with justice and equality of opportunity for boys everywhere, and especially for the underprivileged and unemployed, we deplore the decision of the Decatur, Ala, jurors, in rendering the death verdict in the trial of Haywood Patterson in what is known as the Scottsboro case. We commend the fairness of the presiding judge, but regard the jury's verdict as one dictated by prejudices which make incalculably harder the work of fair play and social un- derstanding which our organizations aim at developing among boys and youth generally. We point to the fact that this whole lamentable situation was provoked partly by conditions of unemployment which sent the Negro lads out on the road job-seeking and resulted in conflict with their white fellow-hoboes; and we call upon a fair-minded public to anticipate similar conflicts by supporting recreational and social agencies seeking a general and effective solution of the problem of unemployed boys. Dear Governor Miller: The enclosed statement was submitted and discussed at a meeting of representatives of national agencies dealing with boys held yester- day in New York City. We are forwarding this protest of the Decatur decision to you be- cause it appears to us that there is a significant connection between the case of these Scotsboro boys and the problem of wandering and un- employed boys about which our agencies and the nation generally are con- cerned. We urge that you exert your good offices in the cause of justice and thus expedite our work with youth regardless of race, creed or sec- tion. Governor, State of Alabama,
Dear Sir:
I address my letter of inquiry to you knowing
that you will direct it to the proper quaters for
answering.
Recently in your state there was a good deal
of newspaper and judical hulaballoo about nine
negroes, charged with attaching a white girl.
In our English class (Senior English, East-
side High School) there is a person of extreme
radical ideas who has swayed most of the class
with his eloquent discussion of this subject.
During his talk, he claimed that it was imposs-
ible for a negro to obtain justice in the South.
So I write for information to refute this subject.
I would also be gratefull for any particulars con-
cerning the lawyers sent down to defend the negroes,
general conditions and treatment of the negroes,
and any points of the case which you may think
important.
Thanking you in advance,
Ernest R. Betz
